Assessment of factors influencing health-related quality of life in HIV-infected patients

Abstract: ObjectivesHealth-related quality of life (HRQL) is used in the assessment of chronic illness. Regarding HIV infection, HRQL assessment is an objective for physicians and institutions since antiretroviral treatment delays HIV clinical progression. The aim of this study was to determine the factors with the most influence on HRQL in HIV-infected people and to create a predictive model. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study in 150 patients in a tertiary hospital. HRQL data were collected using the Medical O… Show more

“…This finding confirms those of previous studies (Briongos Figuero et al, 2011;Ruiz Perez et al, 2005) in which it was shown that social support may reduce depressive mood and promote better QoL. However, social support may not always be helpful for PLWHA; the type of support (negative or positive) may have a major impact on AIDS Care 999 the relationship (Vosvick et al, 2004).…”

“…Previous studies have shown that depression not only negatively impacts the QoL of PLWHA (Briongos Figuero, Bachiller Luque, Palacios Martin, Gonzalez Sagrado, & Eiros Bouza, 2011;Simoni et al, 2011) but also relates to rapid disease progression (Gore-Felton et al, 2006), as evidenced by a decline in CD4+ cell count, increased viral load, higher frequencies of health care visits and hospitalizations, and reduced survival rates (Mavandadi et al, 2009). Depression is associated with worsening disease management because depressive symptoms may have a negative effect on medication adherence and compliance with treatment regimens (Mavandadi et al, 2009).…”

“…Our findings also partially agree with prior studies that found reduced physical QoL among co-infected patients compared to patients with HIV only (Tsui et al, 2007) and that co-infection with HCV is related to lower mental health scores (Briongos Figuero et al, 2011). Some explanations may account for these results.…”

“…Interestingly, and in contrast to prior findings (e.g., Briongos Figuero et al, 2011;Mandorfer et al, 2014), we found that being on cART was significantly associated with higher QoL among co-infected patients but not among patients with HIV only. A probable explanation may be related to the evidence suggesting that cART-induced immune reconstitution might reverse the unfavourable course of hepatitis C in patients with advanced HIV disease (Vogel & Rockstroh, 2009) and that patients on cART have lower liver-related mortality (Quirishi et al, 2003).…”

“…With improved survival due to antiretroviral treatments, increased attention is paid to the quality of life of people living with HIV/AIDS (Bing et al, 2000;Briongos Figuero, Bachiller Luque, Palacios Martin, Gonzalez Sagrado, & Eiros Bouza, 2011;Duracinsky, Herrmann, et al, 2012). To date, few studies have investigated their self-rated health, which in fact is an important component of quality of life (Harding et al, 2012;Koelmeyer, English, Smith, & Grierson, 2014;Liu et al, 2006;Mrus et al, 2006;Munyati et al, 2006).…”
