Assessment of Five-Year Vegetation Cover Changes to Support Green Open Spaces Monitoring in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract: Surakarta City's population is growing every year, putting pressure on the land and vegetation. Surakarta City has a population of 500,173 people in 2010. The population of this city is growing every year, driving an increase in the demand for land and living facilities. This study aims to analyze the availability of vegetated land as urban green space, and calculate the 5-year (2010–2015) vegetation cover changes. The methods used visual interpretation and on-screen digitization of the image Landsat 7 ETM+ sa… Show more

“…Providing public green spaces which are dominated by trees is one of the efforts to preserve the environment in urban areas. It is well known that domination of trees in a land will be able to provide various environmental services, such as providing clean and fresh air [1], soothing shade [2], absorbing waste particles scattered in the air, absorbing noise pollution, providing a microclimate etc.…”

“…The Shannon-Wiener diversity index has been widely used in environmental research to measure species richness and diversity because of its simplicity of estimation and interpretation [20]. This index provides prior information about the tree community found in a location [22]. The highest diversity was found in the growth rate of trees and saplings with values of 3.23 and 3.03, respectively.…”

“…Surakarta is included in the ten cities with the largest population density, reaching 507,825 people [1]. The increase in population in Surakarta has resulted in increased pressure on green open spaces [2]. The rate of urbanization with various M M Harahap 1,2,3* , E Poedjirahajoe 4 , S H M B Santosa 5 and P Y A P objectives that are difficult to contain and with a limited amount of land is an obstacle in the management of green open spaces in the city of Surakarta.…”
