Assessment of fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated cardiac surgical patients

Abstract: The results of our study suggest that stroke volume variation and its surrogate pulse pressure variation derived from pulse contour analysis using an improved algorithm can serve as indicators of fluid responsiveness in normoventilated cardiac surgical patients. Whenever changes in systemic vascular resistance are expected, the PiCCO plus system should be recalibrated.

“…In this review, we adopted the modified 19-point STARD score to judge the quality of the investigation in the selected studies (Table 1). Each criterion was assigned one point and the overall score divided into categories: poor (score 0-10), adequate (11)(12)(13)(14)(15) and good (16)(17)(18)(19). The results of the selected studies were not metaanalysed due to the heterogeneity in methodologies, patient populations, modes of mechanical ventilation, definitions of fluid responsiveness and volume of fluid challenges given.…”

“…In the past decades, it has been shown that static indices such as CVP, PCWP, left ventricular end diastolic area, and right ventricular end-diastolic volume are not accurate for the prediction of fluid responsiveness [13,[47][48][49][50][51]. In contrast, several studies have shown that dynamic indices, such as SVV and PPV, are able to predict fluid responsiveness accurately [52][53][54][55][56].…”
