Assessment of functional outcome of surgical management of proximal humerus fracture treated with PHILOS plate

Abstract:
Background: Proximal humeral fractures were treated conservatively in the past and often had compromised functional results. With the advancement of surgical techniques, these fractures, especially displaced, are now more often managed operatively; to meet the needs of the patient, provide early rehabilitation and better functional outcome. The aim of this study was to assess the functional outcome of operative management of proximal humeral fractures with… Show more

“…In the present study, 13 (61.9%) were males and 8 (38.1%) were females, with male preponderance. Our study had results similar to study given by Jagiasi et al and Bansal et al 20,22 A study by Vijay et al had observed female predominance. 21 This can be explained by the younger age group of patients in our study in which males are outdoors to earn livelihood, and elderly females with osteoporosis have higher risk of fracture with minor fall.…”

“…In our study, the maximum incidence of proximal humeral fracture was observed in 5 th decade with mean age 44.2 years, which has similar results as compared to Gerber et al (44.9 years), Jagiasi et al (47.1 years), and Vijay et al (51.29). [19][20][21] In comparison to incidence of PHF of our study to Vijay et al our study has lesser mean age. 21 This is due to the younger group of patients selected in the present study.…”

“…A study by Ali M and Wajid MA found the mean constant score for the operated shoulder was 62.3 as compared to 90.3 for the contralateral shoulder [12] . The functional outcome of cases as per grading of constant score was excellent in 40% cases, very good in 6.66%, good in 30% cases, fair in 20% cases and poor in 3.33% cases [13] . A study by Srikanth S et al noticed excellent results in 66.67% cases, good results in 16.67% cases and poor results in 10% cases [16] .…”

“…Open reduction and internal fixation with PHILOS plate got better functional outcome with fewer implant related complications [12] . Management of proximal humerus fractures with PHILOS plate is a feasible modality and provides good stable fixation with the better functional outcome [13] . A study by Akram Muhammad Aliuddin et al concluded that proximal humerus fractures treated with PHILOS plate have better functional outcome [14] .…”
