Sesame is an important seed oil crop serving diverse value chains. It is useful in the food, feed, confectionery and baking industry. Sesame seed is industrially processed to supply cooking oil, tahini, halvah and cosmetic oils, while the seed cake is used for livestock feed. The leading eight world sesame producers with corresponding total annual production include Sudan (981,000 tons), Myanmar (768,858 tons), India (746,000 tons), Nigeria (572,761 tons), United Republic of Tanzania (561,103 tons), China (433,386 tons), China Mainland (431,500 tons) and Ethiopia (301,302 tons) (FAOSTAT, 2020).
