Assessment of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Measures in Transportation Sector of Malaysia

Abstract: Malaysia has committed to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 40% by the year 2020. The fact that transport sector of Malaysia shares a big portion of national GHG emissions; its role is paramount. The present study reviews the current state of GHG emission, the major technical and policy measures that can be adopted, and the measures that have been initiated in Malaysia for GHG emission reduction in transportation sector. Data related to road vehicles and GHG emission from road transportation a… Show more

“…In contrast, pollutant emissions from the optimal hybrid PV/diesel with battery system is less than one third of the emissions from the standalone diesel system, and this can be further reduced with increasing PV ratings or increasing numbers of batteries. It is noteworthy that the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions has become a primary focus of environmental programs in Malaysia, and the possible reduction in pollutant emissions can strengthen Malaysia's effort to reduce carbon footprint by 40% by 2020 [35].…”

“…The use of the standalone diesel system leads to pollutant emissions of approximately 242 metric ton/yr. Significantly, long-term usage of the standalone diesel system will contribute further to Malaysia's already high global greenhouse gas emissions (although Malaysia shares only 0.3% of global greenhouse gas emissions [34], Malaysia's greenhouse gas emissions at 7.7 metric ton/capita as of 2010 has surpassed many developed countries [35,36]). In contrast, pollutant emissions from the optimal hybrid PV/diesel with battery system is less than one third of the emissions from the standalone diesel system, and this can be further reduced with increasing PV ratings or increasing numbers of batteries.…”

“…The increase of coal share in electricity supply generation strengthen the expectation that coal will overtake gas and emerge as the dominant fuel in The initiatives in relation to electricity supply generation for reduction of CO 2 emission can be taken with consideration of these three initiatives namely energy efficiency, renewable energy and solid waste management. The energy efficiency is considered as short term roadmap for the reduction of emissions whilst renewable energy and solid waste management is considered as short to medium term roadmap in emissions reduction [9]. Thus, this study is conducted in order to apply the short to medium term roadmap in electricity Supply Company for the reduction of CO 2 emission.…”

“…Consequently, their depletion have caused a continuous increase in the price as well as a high escalation in global warming [2]. Therefore, the research and development sectors have made great efforts for finding alternative energy sources such as biomass, solar, wind, natural gas and biogas, which are cleaner supplements [3,4].…”
