Assessment of groundwater hydrochemistry, water quality, and health risk in Hainan Island, China

Abstract: Groundwater is an important source of water for human sustenance. The determination of groundwater quality at island sites is an urgent priority in China, but there are lacking systematic reports relating to them. Here, 63 groups of groundwater samples were collected and analyzed of Hainan Island. The groundwater in the study area is weakly alkaline, mainly comprising hard and soft freshwater. The predominant anions and cations are HCO3−, and Ca2+ and Na+, respectively, and the main water chemistry types are H… Show more

“…(c) Analysis of water quality according to irrigation water indices Proper water use for irrigation implies understanding its properties around its chemical composition. The concentration and composition of certain soluble salts and carbonates in water determine the quality of water intended for crop irrigation [91]. For example, it is known that a high salt content can cause risks of salinity and sodium in the soil, with effects on both the soil and crops [8,92].…”

“…Comparable to the water quality indices, the human health risk assessment is used to evaluate the potential risk to human health and involves the exposure pathway, pollutant concentrations in the media, and exposure factors to calculate the exposure dose for comparison against a toxicological benchmark (WHO 2021). The exposure pathway of groundwater ingestion is a significant route of exposure to toxic substances, in some cases with a hazard quotient > 1 (Liu et al 2023;Hou et al 2023).…”
