Assessment of heavy metals pollution in groundwater of Golgohar iron ore mine area, Iran

Abstract: The Golgohar iron ore mine in southern Iran is a large open pit that operates below the groundwater table. Dewatering operations and mining activities could be responsible for generating metal contamination in the groundwater of the area. In order to assess this, groundwater, soil, solid waste and rock samples were collected and analyzed for heavy metals. Evaluation was done by comparing the results with the ''heavy metal pollution index'', the ''heavy metal evaluation index'' and the ''degree of contamination… Show more

“…Mining of metals from the ores and subsequent milling processes to remove the unwanted materials may also lead to the presence of such metals in soil and water around these areas (Stamatis et al 2001;Bird et al 2009). Distribution of heavy metals in water and soil nearby gold (Al-Hobaib et al 2013), iron ore (Jahanshahi and Zare 2015), uranium (Giri et al 2010;Elango 2013, 2014), chromite (Krishna et al 2013), antimony (Fu and Wei 2013) and polymetallic (Xu et al 2015) mines have also been examined.…”

“…Previous studies conducted at GEG were directed at understanding mineralization (Babaki and Aftabi 2006; Heydari 2008; Mücke and Golestaneh 1982), mineralogy and petrography (Mücke and Younessi 1994), mining method of the ore bodies (Azadeh et al 2010; Saeidi et al 2014), environmental impact assessment (Phillips 2013), and groundwater characteristics (Jahanshahi and Zare 2015). However, no research has been documented about PM mineralogy and associated health effects around GEG.…”
