Assessment of Hounsfield unit in the differential diagnosis of odontogenic cysts

Abstract: Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of Hounsfield unit (HU) assessment with multislice-CT in the differentiation of radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). Methods: In total, 307 odontogenic cysts (RCs, DCs and OKCs) were included in this study. Cysts with lesion diameter <10 mm, cysts with artefacts affecting measurement of HU values, cysts involving infection and recurrent cysts were regarded as exclusion criteria. Images were acq… Show more

“…Air, on the other hand, has a very low HU value due to its low electron density and little attenuation of X‐rays 29 . Moreover, HU can vary depending on the CT scanning machine used 30 . An object's properties, CT scanner settings, and CT scanner type can all affect HU.…”

“…Analysis of the lesional content allows a better diagnostic orientation, essentially through the possibility of density measurement provided by the scanner. 20 With the technological evolution, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) is currently used in all the fields of dental medicine and maxillofacial surgery. The main advantage of CBCT radiography is the multi-planar cross-sectional images in various orientations and the three-dimensional reconstructions based on a single scan of the fields of view, varying from a single tooth to the whole maxilla-facial area.…”

“…Moreover, Hounsfield unit (HU) values on CT have been reported to be significantly lower for OKCs than other odontogenic cysts. This can provide more accurate diagnosis at an early stage so as to prevent recurrences at a later stage (Uehara et al, 2021).…”
