Assessment of inflammation in the rheumatoid knee joint: correlation between clinical, radioisotopic, and thermographic methods.

Abstract: SUMMARY Standard clinical methods of assessing joint inflammation are being supplemented increasingly by radioisotopic and thermographic studies. However, the correlation between these different methods has not been firmly established. In the quantification of synovitis by infrared thermography we have shown that the heat distribution index (HDI) based on thermal pattern is more reliable and is less affected by diurnal variations in joint temperature than the commonly used thermographic index, which is based o… Show more

“…O grupo de articulações em pacientes com artrite reumatóide mostrou um índice maior, com uma média de 3,96 (4,32) . Estudos têm demonstrado maior sensibilidade e maior correlação do HDI em relação aos achados clínicos de gravidade da articulação afetada do que o TI (10,33) .…”

“…6 7 The poor correlation of this parameter with the other measures is probably secondary to the changes in ambient temperature, the timing in measurements in individual patients, and the need to measure intra-articular S66 RHEUMATOID AKTHRmS temperatures, in order to obtain meaningful results. 2 It is conceivable that the heat distribution index 2 might be a more appropriate measurement. The necessary equipment required to determine this parameter, accurately, however was not available.…”

“…Knee involvement, including pain, swelling, tenderness and morning stiffness was graded 2 as absent [0], mild [1J, moderate [2], and severe (3]. Morning stiffness was estimated in minutes (up to 15 minutes = 0, 15 to 30 minutes ' ""' 1, 30 to 60 minutes -2, 60 minutes = 3).…”
