Assessment of maize-based conservation agriculture production systems (CAPS) in rainfed uplands of Odisha, India.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of field studies conducted to assess the crop yield, system productivity, profitability and soil fertility of maize under the influence of different maize-based conservation agriculture production systems (CAPS) in Odisha, India, during the rainy and post-rainy seasons of 2011/12 and 2012/13. It was shown that location-specific and low-input conservation agriculture practice, such as CAPS, can help farmers to intensify crop production in marginal lands without any environmental … Show more

“…The impact of climate change is especially more severe in the rainfed regions of South Asia. Rainfed agriculture in India currently accounts for about two-thirds of the total cropped area and nearly half of the total value of agricultural output and nearly half of all food grains are grown under rainfed conditions (Roul et al, 2015;Singh et al, 2021). Sapkota et al (2015) reviewed the effects of CA from the perspective of adaptation to heat and water stresses, and reduction GHG emissions in South Asia.…”

“…Accordingly, India offers a potentially unique example in the development of models and mechanisms by which nutritional needs can be addressed sustainably (Ritchie et al, 2018). Food security of the poor will be at risk due to disproportionate population growth and limited arable land (Roul et al, 2015).…”

“…One approach to addressing these issues is the introduction and adaptation of conservation agriculture production systems (CAPSs). CAPS are defined as integrated production systems consisting of minimum soil disturbance, appropriate crop rotation or intercropping, and continuous organic soil cover ( Roul et al, 2015 ). The integrated nature of CAPS builds on decades of research in more large-scale and mechanized farming systems in which zero- or minimum-tillage systems were developed and combined with crop rotation and residue retention or cover cropping to reduce soil erosion and related declines in soil and natural resource quality ( Idol, 2015 ).…”
