Assessment of mechanical and microstructural properties of geopolymers produced from metakaolin, silica fume, and red mud

Abstract: Geopolymers have been studied as viable alternative to traditional Portland cementbased products, given the use of industrial by-products as raw materials. This work evaluated the mechanical and microstructural properties of geopolymeric mortars produced with sodium hydroxide solution, metakaolin, silica fume, and red mud. The mixtures were produced by means of dosages with different molar ratios and curing conditions. The raw materials were characterized by granulometry, chemical, mineralogical, and thermal a… Show more

“…[88] It was used as a single precursor [21,42,63,81,85,87,[89][90][91][93][94][95]100]. In the case of binary [21,[43][44][45]57,73,88,92,[95][96][97][98][99]101,102] and ternary [101,102] precursors, it was used together with a variety of conventional and/or alternative sources [21,[43][44][45]57,73,88,92,[95][96][97][98][99]101]. Mixed precursors containing different ratios of RH, RHA, MK, POFA, and GGBFS were also investigated [79].…”

“…It was used as an ingredient of AA for GGBFS [28,29] and FA-based AABs [119]. Additionally, it was utilised in binary and ternary precursors with a variety of conventional and/or alternative feedstocks [28,58,72,80,98,99,120,[122][123][124]. Moreover, a one-part geopolymer was investigated by calcinating RM with SH pellets [121,124].…”

“…6 Iron ore tailings (IOT) have been widely studied in recent years as a blend material for conventional ordinary Portland cement (OPC)-based composites and alkaliactivated-based composites as fine aggregate, filler, raw material for clinker production, and as a precursor for alkali-activated materials. [7][8][9][10][11][12] Research has been done about the use of mine tailings to develop alkali-activated materials for application as construction and building materials [13][14][15] ; however, there is a scarce number of studies using the IOT in alkali-activated composites, as well as using the IOT as the main precursor to the alkali-activation.…”
