Assessment of Mosquito Diversity and Evaluation of Impact of House Treatment with DDT on Their Population in Amauro, Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria.

Abstract: Malaria, a disease that has increasingly been ravaging human population still has no sustainable remedy. Therefore, mosquito diversity and impact of house treatment with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) on their population were investigated by the use of miniature Centre for Disease Control light trap (model 512) and WHO -approved compression sprayer in Amauro, Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. A total of 9,114 adult mosquitoes belonging to Anopheles, Aedes and Culex genera were captured an… Show more

“…That the genus Lethocerus commonly called the African giant water bug abound in Africa which (Imo State), the study area is part is supported by literature [22,23]. Their presence in any environment may have implications for fish biology, biological control of mosquitoes, man's diet, and health [13,14,16,17,21].…”

“…The salivary secretion of L. fakir (Gistel) for instance contains a potent mixture of hydrolytic enzymes (proteases) Psyche which liquefies the soft tissues of frogs [14]. Furthermore, by feeding on mosquito larvae, there is increasing evidence that early instars of Lethocerus may appear promising in the biological control of malaria vector, mosquitoes [15][16][17].…”

“…The diversity and abundance of mosquitoes within all geopolitical zones of Nigeria had been affirmed by several authors in their studies (Nwosu et al 2011;Ebenezer et al 2013;Afolabi et al 2019). Otuoke, which happens to be a deltaic community has many mosquitoes that are resident, although the abundance, distribution and species diversity had not been studied and recorded, hence it becomes imperative to take an in-depth view into the distribution and species abundance of mosquitoes in this area to provide baseline information.…”

“…Anopheles mosquitoes constitute various species with peculiar behaviour associated with their biting activities and malaria transmission (Oyewole et al, 2007;Nwosu et al, 2011). Large number of Anopheles species have been reported in Nigeria, but the world's most efficient vectors of human malaria belong to members of Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.)…”
