Assessment of mungbean genotypes for durable resistance to Yellow Mosaic Disease: Genotype × Environment interactions

Abstract: Yellow mosaic disease (YMD) is the major constraint of mungbean for realizing high productivity worldwide. Moreover, management of disease using YMD‐resistant genotypes is the simplest approach. Therefore, based on a preliminary screening of 220 genotypes during the year 2010 and 2011 at 17 locations, a set of 25 genotypes was further selected to evaluate at six locations over 2 years for identification of more stable resistant genotypes. The genotype and genotype × environment (GGE) analysis indicated that th… Show more

“…Host-plant resistance towards root-knot nematode infestation is an effective approach in mungbean for reducing yield penalties caused due to the presence of nematode population beyond the economic threshold level (ETL). Unfortunately, screening of genotypes for disease resistance has the drawback of the irregularity of environmental conditions and pest population 1,29,35,36 . Likewise, genotypes screening against M. incognita is a complicated task due to the complex behavioural pattern of the nematode with ambiguous symptoms of gall formation 21 .…”

“…The 'ideal' and 'desirable' genotypes identified in the present study with durable resistance could be a valuable resource for mungbean resistance breeding programme against root-knot nematode infestation. This approach has been successfully deployed for identifying resistant genotypes in different crops against the different pathogen 1,28,29,31,52 .…”

“…Previously, most of the researchers, such as Singh et al [117], used the spreader row technique to create sufficient inoculum loads that are used to screen the mungbean genotypes for YMD resistance. Some of the researchers [153,154] have emphasized multi-environment screening of the germplasm to discover the YMD-resistant genotypes. Because of constraints in natural screening and the chances of mixed infection, implementing an artificial screening technique is strongly needed to mitigate this issue.…”

“…In some year's losses exceed more than 80% due to incidence of MYMV. Apart from the diseases several other factors are responsible for the lower production of mungbean, which includes: (i) Low genetic variability in locally cultivated varieties, (ii) yield fluctuates due to unusual environmental stresses including drought and salinity, (iii) photoperiod sensitivity, (iv) lack of synchronous pod formation, (v) incidence of insect infestation and (vi) poor cultural practices (Chand et al 2015, Gnanaraj et al 2015, Parihar et al 2017).…”
