Assessment of Nitrogen Use Efficiency in Algerian Saharan Maize Populations for Tolerance under Drought and No-Nitrogen Stresses

Abstract: Increasing drought incidence and infertile soils require the improvement of maize for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) under drought conditions. The objectives were to assess tolerance and genetic effects of Algerian populations under no-nitrogen and water stress. We evaluated a diallel among six Algerian maize populations under no-nitrogen vs. 120 kg/ha N fertilization and drought vs. control. Variability was significant among populations and their crosses for NUE under drought. Additive genetic effects could be… Show more

“…Increasing NUE is an essential soil–plant interactive trait that has been under consideration for many years because it explains the overall grain production and also estimates the economic return. Generally, NUE is defined as the sum of N uptake efficiency and N utilization efficiency, thus explaining that increase in NUE boosts the crop yield, biomass, and quality ( Congreves et al, 2021 ; Manschadi and Soltani, 2021 ; Riache et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In maize, some of the descent lines from the cross of the Algerian landraces Sidi Maamar × Aougrout were tolerant to drought and no-nitrogen stress [7]. Sukto et al [8] carried out mass selection in the small-ear waxy corn populations of Thailand to improve the carotenoid content and resistance to downy mildew; also in Thailand, Dermail et al [9] crossed three supersweet corn lines with eight waxy ones to generate 48 F1 hybrids.…”
