IntroductionVarious studies have reported poor awareness and knowledge of dentistry in the Nigerian population. There is, however, paucity of information assessing the knowledge and awareness of medical doctors/students and nurses about dentistry. The present study is aimed at determining the knowledge and awareness of medical doctors/students and nurses about dentistry.MethodsSelf-administered questionnaires were randomly distributed among medical doctors/students, and nurses of Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospitals’ Complex, Ile-Ife, Nigeria. Information collected using the questionnaire included participants’ biodata, questions evaluating dental awareness, knowledge of systemic and oral health connections as well as referral practices. The data analysis was done with STATA version 11 software.ResultsA total of 300 questionnaires were randomly distributed among doctors/students and nurses, 206 were returned (response rate of 69%). Of the returned questionnaires, 129(63%) were males and 77(37%) were females. There were 42 medical doctors, 49 nurses and 115 medical students. The mean age of the participants was 26.7 years (SD 5.2). Majority (99.5%) was aware of dental profession, but 92% had never referred patients for dental consultation. One third (31%) of medical doctors believed that Ludwig angina was a cardiac disease. A large proportion of the respondents (61%) see no need for routine dental visit while 27% would want to visit the dentist only when they had a dental complaint.ConclusionAlthough a large percentage of the participants claimed to be aware of dentistry, our findings revealed low level of knowledge and attitude to Dentistry. Efforts should be made towards closing this knowledge gap to achieve efficient oral health.

Aim: The present study evaluated oral hygiene awareness and dental health problems among the medical undergraduate students of Gujrat Medical Education and Research Society (GMERS) Medical College & Hospital, Valsad, India. Materials and methods:This was a cross-sectional study which included 196 medical undergraduate students. All the students were asked to fill a structured questionnaire which included total of 16 multiple-choice questions pertaining to their oral hygiene awareness, oral health practices, and dental health problems. Data collected were subjected to statistical analysis and results were expressed as absolute numbers and percentages for males and females. Gender-wise comparison to their responses was also made using Chi-square test.Results: On analyzing the data, it was found that 79.1% students perceived their state of oral hygiene as "Good"; 74.5% students brushed only once a day. All the students used toothpaste and toothbrush; 44.9% students used soft-bristled toothbrush and 70.4% students changed their toothbrush every 3 months; 71.9% students used no interdental cleaning aids and only 23.5% students used fluoridated toothpaste; 47.4% of participants never visited dentist; 20.9% students reported to have toothache in past 12 months. Conclusion:From the findings of this study, it can be concluded that medical undergraduate students had lack of awareness regarding oral hygiene and less-than-optimum standard of oral health practices. These students also had tendency to visit dentist only when there is any dental problem and majority of students had never visited dentist.Clinical significance: Medical professionals are considered as a role model by the society. Improving their knowledge about oral hygiene awareness and oral health practices can ultimately benefit the people they are going to treat in the future.

Introduction: Oral health is a window to our overall health. Negligence to oral health might have adverse effects on the general well being of a person. Hence, early detection and prompt treatment is of utmost importance. Lack of general medical practitioner’s knowledge of oral disease has been shown to contribute to delays in referral and treatment, thus significantly affecting the associated morbidity and mortality. Methods: The present study was undertaken to assess knowledge, attitude and dental awareness among medical practitioners in Pokhara, Nepal. A list of medical practitioners was obtained from the NMA (Nepal Medical Association, Gandaki branch, Nepal) and sample size of 109 study subjects was calculated. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the medical practitioners. from March 2018 to April 2018. The data pertaining to their knowledge, attitude and awareness about oral health was gathered using a self-administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Results of the study showed that the medical practitioners had moderate to good knowledge about dentistry as 97.2% of the medical practitioners answered correctly saying that brushing tooth daily prevents tooth decay and periodontal disease Whereas, when asked about the changes in the oral cavity which most commonly is associated with progression towards oral cancer, only 46.8% answered correctly by responding to non-healing ulcer/ erosive lesions. Conclusions: It is imperative that the dental/medical practitioners have good knowledge about the oral diseases and its systemic manifestations, so as to have timely referral and early treatment to prevent the associated morbidity and mortality.
