Analysed at the division of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Naini Agricultural Institute, Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture Technology and Sciences. The soil texture of the experimental area varied from sandy loam to . In general, the top soil had higher sand fraction then the lower layers. The study revealed that the range of bulk density was varied from 1.32-1.47 Mg m-3, the bulk density was increased with increasing the depth as the compaction increases. The range of particle density was from 2.36 to 2.49 Mg m-3 and the pore space 37.77 to 44.17 %, respectively. The water retention capacity (WRC) of soil was ranged between 43.56 to 57.28. The pH of soils was in the range between pH 6.67 - 7.75. The electrical conductivity of soil of entire studied area were less than 1.00 dSm-1. The soil organic matter, ranges from 0.13 to 0.38 %. The available nitrogen content of entire studied area was low (162 to 310 kg ha-1). The available phosphorus and potassium content varied in between 15 to 52 kg ha-1 and 125 to 255 kg ha-1. The available zinc, copper, manganese and iron of experimental soil ranged between 0.30 to 0.82 mg kg-1, 0.36 to 1.32 mg kg-1, 1.50 to 6.04 mg kg-1 and 2.36 to 9.62 mg kg-1. The fertility data base would be very useful for extension functionaries, agricultural officers, scientist and above all the farmers for a sustainable crop production.

This study investigates seasonal variations in the microbial and physico-chemical properties of soil in the Ambur, Vaniyambadi, and Pernambut taluks, regions in Tiruppathur District, India impacted by tannery effluents. Soil samples, collected during both the wet and dry seasons of 2021, were analysed for microbial contamination and key physico-chemical factors. The microbial analysis detected Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus spp., Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, with higher microbial counts observed in the wet season, likely due to runoff from tannery waste. Physico-chemical analysis showed slightly alkaline soil (pH 6.81 to 8.91), with more pronounced alkalinity in the dry season. Electrical conductivity (EC) ranged from 2297.3 µS/cm to 4300 µS/cm, peaking in the dry season due to the concentration of salts from evaporation. Elevated levels of phosphorus, calcium carbonate, and heavy metals such as chromium, lead, zinc, and nickel were detected, particularly in the dry season. These findings indicate significant soil contamination from tannery effluents, leading to soil degradation and posing potential risks to both the environment and public health. The study highlights the urgent need for effective waste management and treatment to mitigate the adverse effects of tannery effluents on soil and surrounding ecosystems. Seasonal variations further emphasize the importance of targeted measures to reduce contamination, especially during the dry season. Future research should focus on sustainable waste disposal solutions and evaluate the long-term ecological impacts of tannery-related pollution.

Evaluation of the fertility status of flooded soils in the Saharsa District, Bihar

The sampling location was Saharsa, which is one of Bihar's most flood-prone area Flooding is the leading source of soil degradation in the district. The current study was carried out in the Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry laboratory at Sam Higginbottom University of Agriculture Technology and Sciences. 27 samples were collected from several farmer's fields, and composite sampling was carried out from three depths of 0-15, 15-30, and 30-45 cm. The results revealed that the texture was sandy loam to sandy clay, bulk density ranged from 1.11 to 1.59 Mg/m3, particle density ranged from 2.22 to 2.85 Mg/m3, pore space ranged from 52.60 to 66.50 % and water holding capacity ranged from 61.11 to 78.12 %. The pH ranged from 6.58 to 7.65, E.C. from 0.17 to 0.39 dS/m,(Due to Flooding) Soil Organic Carbon ranged from 0.74 to 1.20 %, Soil has acceptable Bd, Pd, pore space, and water holding capacity. As a result of the beneficial electrical conductivity for plants, the pH of the soil is neutral to alkaline. Sodium is low to medium in range. Low to medium levels of macronutrients are found in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and sulphur. By employing the proper management techniques and supplying the soil with enough nourishment for plant growth, farmers must maintain the health of their soil.
