Assessment of radionuclide contamination in the Black Sea using POSEIDON/RODOS system

Abstract: Abstract. The coupled system of the 3D hydrodynamical model THREETOX and the radiological box model POSEIDON-R, developed in the framework of the European system RODOS for emergency response to a nuclear accident, was applied to the Black Sea for reconstruction and outlook of the radionuclide contamination in result of bomb testing and the Chernobyl accident. For the model verification hydrophysical data was obtained from historical records of up to 15180 observational stations in the Black Sea. The data was g… Show more

“…The dynamical uptake model BURN for biota had been implemented earlier into the POSEIDON system to substitute the Concentration Factors (CF) approach -for aquatic organisms in seas and coastal regions, to assess the activity concentration of radionuclides in biota after accidental releases [2,3]. The reason is that in the case of accidental releases, there is no equilibrium between water and biota, especially in small coastal compartments and (parts of) estuaries.…”

“…The compartment structure of POSEIDON-R namely was refined by using output data on hydrodynamics, temperature, and on salinity of the 3D-hydrodynamical model THREETOX. Since subdivisions were implemented for the Black Sea, Baltic Sea, and Dnieper Bug estuary, the salinity for these compartments are defined [4,5].…”
