Assessment of rainfall erosivity in Southwest Bulgaria using the Fournier index

Abstract: Soil erosion is one of the most widespread environmental problems in Bulgaria, which often occurs together with other dangerous phenomena such as landslides, soil degradation, wind erosion, etc. The main factor for erosion is rainfall. Rainfall erosivity is an indicator of the potential of rainfall to generate erosion processes and is of fundamental importance in the analysis of the climate vulnerability of a given region. The purpose of the present study is to assess rainfall erosivity in one of the most popu… Show more

“…In general, the Fournier index had higher values for the years with annual precipitation anomalies below the average for the period 1951-2020 and during these years on the background of low monthly precipitation high precipitation amounts were observed during the low monthly precipitation. Similar results were found by Nikolova et al (2022) for the southwest part of Bulgaria which is the neighboring territory of the Republic of North Macedonia. Intense rainfall during periods of drought can lead to significant development of soil erosion.…”

“…The utilization of data from pluviographic records is quite difficult for the estimation of the rainfall erosivity and in some cases, there could be a lack of data, especially in certain local regions. Therefore, in order to assess the rainfall erosivity assessment in heterogeneous climate regions, the Fournier index (FI) and modified Fournier index (MFI) which correspond very well with the erosive R-factor for rainfall are recommended (Diodato, Bellocchi, 2007;Nikolova et al, 2022). Fournier (1960) conducted a regression analysis between sedimentation in rivers and several rainfall variables, finding a high correlation between the total annual erosion and the distribution coefficient of rainfall or, most commonly named, Fournier index (FI).…”

“…The results of the present study show that the MFI gives more detailed information about and is more reliable for rainfall erosivity analyses than the FI. Similar results regarding the applicability of the MFI were found by other authors [10,48].…”
