Assessment of RQL Trapped Vortex Combustor for Stationary Gas Turbines

Abstract: This paper describes the evaluation of an alternative combustion approach to achieve low emissions for a wide range of fuel-types. This approach combines the potential advantages of a staged Rich-burn, Quick-mix, Lean-burn (RQL) combustor with the revolutionary Trapped Vortex Combustor (TVC) concept. Although RQL combustors have been proposed for low-BTU fuels, this paper considers the application of an RQL combustor for high-BTU natural gas applications. This paper will describe the RQL/TVC concept and experi… Show more

“…Ramgen Power Systems (RPS) achieved 9 ppmv NOx and 9 ppmv CO emissions on a lean premixed AVC [7] . The USDOE NETL investigated a non-premixed rich-quench-lean version of the AVC concept to investigate the ability to achieve low emissions [8][9] . In 2012, an experimental investigation was performed to evaluate the emission performance of a liquid-fueled trapped vortex combustor under lean premixed prevaporized (LPP) mode. The results validated the feasibility of low emissions for an LPP/TVC and provides a reference for further optimization of the combustor [10] .…”
