Assessment of serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 levels in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: ObjectiveTo determine serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 in overweight and normal weight patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and investigate the possible relationship between these adipokines and metabolic syndrome.MethodsThis cross sectional study enrolled women with PCOS and healthy women. Serum chemerin, vaspin and omentin-1 were assessed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay methods.ResultsForty patients with PCOS and 30 healthy controls were included in the study. In the PCOS group, 18 women w… Show more

“…Studies have suggested that the PCOS status positively correlates with increased vaspin concentration (Cakal, Ustun, Engin-Ustun, Ozkaya, & Kilinç, 2011). Another study showed that there was no correlation between PCOS and vaspin levels (Guvenc, Var, Goker, & Kuscu, 2016). However, the effect of vaspin in the pathogenesis of PCOS has not been clearly specified, and further studies are needed to determine the effects of this hormone on adipose tissue and metabolism.…”

“…However, circulating chemerin was increased in overweight PCOS patients compared with lean PCOS patients and also they found that there was no significant difference between normal and overweight controls in serum chemerin. These findings suggest that BMI alone is not a predictive factor for circulating chemerin [11]. But this study did not include obese patients or patients with insulin resistance, which may explain the lack of any difference between groups.…”

“…However, after using multiple regression analysis they found an association between fasting glucose and circulating omentin-1 levels. Guvenc et al did not find a correlation between serum omentin levels and components of MetS such as fasting glucose, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides in women with polycystic ovary syndrome [28]. Elsaid et al showed that omentin-1 is inversely related to waist circumference and systolic blood pressure [29].…”
