Assessment of Serum Ischemia-modified albumin, Prolidase and Thiol-Disulphide Levels in Subjects With Breast Cancer

Abstract: Background: Oxidative damage is of great importance for patients with breast cancer. Thus, studies were performed to identify the relationship between breast cancer and oxidative stress biomarkers. Objectives: In this study, our aim was to find out the oxidative and antioxidant status, serum thiol-disulphide levels in subjects with breast cancer. Methods: This study was conducted between March and June 2018 with 82 control subjects (aged between 32-67 years) and 127 breast cancer patients (aged between 27-66 y… Show more

“…Oxidative stress may be can be related to breast cancer (30,31). Serum thiol / disulfide levels may be indicative of determining oxidative status in some patient populations (32).The level of disulfide under oxidative stress is anticipated to increase as the thiol level decreases (30,31).Contrary to expectations, no relationship was observed between thiol-disulphide parameters and tumor biomarker values in breast CA group in the present study. Although disulphide /total thiol values decreased and dynamic thiol/total thiol values increased in the group with high CA 15-3, there was no statistical difference in thiol and disulphide amounts.…”

“…MPO is an endogenous metabolic/oxidative lysosomal enzyme secreted by neutrophils and monocytes, which can play a crucial role in tumor invasion by activating carcinogens into genotoxic intermediates and then enhancing xenogenic carcinogenicity (33). As reported, breast cancer patients have higher MPO levels, which may also reflect the oxidative stress imbalance of the disease (34). As to the role of oxidative stress in breast cancer, zapf et al (35) have stated that breast cancer patients have low levels of SOD and high levels of MPO, and simple chemotherapy would aggravate the oxidative stress levels of both.…”
