Assessment of Student Learning Experience in Two Exemplary Engineering Projects

Abstract: In this paper, we examine and quantify similarities of two engineering projects each of which is either 1) an undergraduate research project primarily integrating off-the-shelf devices and referred to as the "system integration and configuration project" or 2) a project primarily involving bottomup implementation using discrete electronic components and ICs while conceived in a top-down design and referred to as the "design and implementation project." For the quantification of similarities and characteristics… Show more

“…where o p is the relative number of observations in agreement and e p is the probability of an agreement occurring by chance. For each question in the questionnaire, Cohen's kappa can be calculated as illustrated in [16]. In interpreting the value of Cohen's kappa, the most widely cited interpretation [17] is that the best possible strength of agreement between raters is when κ = 1.0, values in the range of 0 < κ < 1.0 represent varying levels of agreement from slight to substantial, and κ < 0 indicates poor agreement [15].…”

“…Most PSRs occur inside large craters on the lunar surface. This payload prototype would employ a fourcamera live-streaming design similar to the eclipse payload, as well as a radiation detector based on other payloads we have successfully developed and flown [16]. One challenge of exploring PSRs is the lack of line-of-sight communication between a lander on the rim of a crater and any payload or rover that descends into the crater.…”

“…As one of the balloon flight payloads for the 2017 total solar eclipse [5] , a video-streaming payload was developed to capture the shadows of the solar eclipse and simultaneously live-stream multiple videos via a single 5.8 GHz wireless link. The payload consists of four Raspberry Pis, each with a Pi-camera and a webcam, a high-bit-rate network switch to multiplex all video streams from multiple cameras onto a single stream of data traffic, a 5.8 GHz Ubiquiti Rocket M5 modem to transmit the multiplexed stream of videos to the ground station [6] .…”
