Assessment of the Antioxidant Potential of Hypoestes rosea Leaf in Lead-acetate-induced Albino Rats

Abstract: Hypoestes rosea has been used as a traditional medicine in the Niger delta for dysfunction of the endocrine system. However, there has been no known study on the effects of hypoestes rosea on oxidative stress. In this study we evaluated the effect of aqueous extract of Hypoestes rosea (AEHR) leaf on oxidative stress markers of lead acetate induced male and female albino rats at acute and sub-chronic stages in pre-treatment and post-treatment phases. Animals were divided into 17 groups of five each for both sex… Show more

“…The plasma MDA, TAOC and GSH were determined using colorimetric assay kits (E-BC-K025-S, E-BC-K136-S, and E-BC-K030-M, respectively; Elabscience Biotechnology Inc., Houston, TX, USA). The MDA and GSH analyses were performed according to Moustafa et al [ 41 ], while the TAOC assay was performed according to Uwikor et al [ 50 ].…”

“…Acetaminophen is generally safe at recommended doses, but because the drug is available without prescription, it is potentially more dangerous than other similar drugs when used in excess or overdose (6). Metabolically, acetaminophen is detoxified in the liver by oxidation through a minor cytochrome p450 mediated pathway to produce a highly reactive cytotoxic metabolite, N-acetyl benzoquinone mine (NAPQI), which liver-reduced glutathione (GSH) converts to a water-soluble, harmless product, mercapturic acid, (7). The liver defence system succumbs to acetaminophen drug burden following the depletion of glutathione to pave the way for NAPQI accumulation, and oxidative stress ensues (8) Natural plant products and their derivatives or herbal drugs have gained importance and popularity in recent years because they are considered safe, efficacious, and cheap (9).…”

“…The total antioxidant capacity (TAOC), total superoxide dismutase (TSOD), reduced glutathione (rGSH), and catalase (CAT) were evaluated in the collected plasma samples following the protocols of colorimetric kits (K136, K019, K030, and K031, respectively) obtained from Elabscience Biotechnology Inc. (Houston, TX, USA). The TAOC assay was performed according to Uwikor et al [44]. The method is based on reducing ferric salt reagent by antioxidant enzymes and molecules in the body system, then converting this reaction into a colored product by phenanthroline and measuring it at 520 nm.…”
