In recent years, there has been a considerable rise in the production of novel metabolites derived from fungi compared to the ones originating from bacteria. These organic substances are utilized in various sectors such as farming, healthcare, and pharmaceutical. Since all dividing living cells contain primary metabolites, secondary metabolites are synthesized by utilizing intermediate compounds or by-products generated from the primary metabolic pathways. Secondary metabolites are not critical for the growth and development of an organism; however, they exhibit a variety of distinct biological characteristics. White-rot fungi are the only microorganisms able to decompose all wood components. Hence, they play an important role in both the carbon and nitrogen cycles by decomposing non-living organic substrates. They are ubiquitous in nature, particularly in hardwood (e.g., birch and aspen) forests. White-rot fungi, besides ligninolytic enzymes, produce different bioactive substances during their secondary metabolism including some compounds with antimicrobial and anticancer properties. Such properties could be of potential interest for the pharmaceutical industries. Considering the importance of the untapped biologically active secondary metabolites from white-rot fungi, the present paper reviews the secondary metabolites produced by white-rot fungi with different interesting bioactivities.

In the last three decades, human awareness of the promotion of good health through dietary intervention had increased. Hence, there has been advocacy for the promotion and consumption of health-enhancing foods referred to as functional foods. Myconutrients and chemicals obtained mainly from higher fungi have also received attention as sources of bioactive compounds that can serve as functional foods. Moreover, the importance of mineral elements in our diet for the maintenance of human health cannot be over-emphasized. These elements are responsible for a lot of chemical and electrical processes that enhance the stable homeostatic physiological state in the body and their absence normally results in deficiency diseases. These processes are highly specified and specialized and the human body can only function properly if the accurate balance of minerals and other elements is continually being supplied to look after our system. Most staple foods consumed by humans are lacking in one essential mineral element or the other. It is therefore expedient to find a way to remedy this. Edible and medicinal mushrooms that can easily absorb minerals and can bio-accumulate them as functional organic compounds during growth can therefore be used as a vehicle to supply these mineral elements that are not in adequate amounts in our diet. This will certainly be a definite strategy to solve the problem of mineral malnutrition. Some of these essential elements are selenium, iron, zinc, calcium and so on. This paper, therefore, highlights the potential of mushrooms as a hydra-headed vehicle for the supply of mycoactive compounds and essential minerals in our diets as a means of promoting human health.

Secondary metabolites are hidden gems in mushrooms. Understanding these secondary metabolites’ biological and pharmacological effects can be aided by identifying them. The purpose of this work was to profile the mycochemical components of the extracts of Auricularia auricula judae, Microporus xanthopus, Termitomyces umkowaani, Trametes elegans, and Trametes versicolor to comprehend their biological and pharmacological capabilities. Mushroom samples were collected from Kenya’s Arabuko–Sokoke and Kakamega National Reserved Forests and identified using morphological and molecular techniques. Chloroform, 70% ethanol, and hot water solvents were used to extract the mycochemical components. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to analyze the chloroform, 70% ethanol, and hot water extracts of all the species examined. A total of 51 compounds were isolated from all extracts and classified as carboxylic acids, esters, phenols, fatty acids, alcohol, epoxides, aldehydes, fatty aldehydes, isoprenoid lipids, and steroids. Tetracosamethyl-cyclododecasiloxane (18.90%), oleic acid (72.90%), phenol, 2, 6-bis (1, 1-dimethylethyl)-4-methyl-, and methylcarbamate (26.56%) were all found in high concentrations in A. auricular judae, M. xanthopus, T. umkowaani, T. elegans, and T. versicolor, respectively. Fatty acids make up the majority of the compounds isolated from the T. elegans chloroform extract and the T. umkowaani 70% ethanol extract, respectively. Particularly, these fatty acids play crucial roles in the anti-inflammatory, hypocholesterolemic, anticancer, and antibiofilm formation activities. These bioactive elements indicate that the extracts of five wild mushrooms may be reliable sources of secondary metabolites for therapeutic development. Therefore, additional research is required to comprehend the usefulness of these chemicals in many functional areas and to improve the present understanding of macrofungi.
