Assessment of the antistaphylococcal properties and bioactive compounds of raw and fermented Trametes polyzona (Pers.) Justo extracts

Abstract: Trametes species are polyporoid white rot fungi that are important in medicine as well as serving as bioremediator and biodegrader of cellulosic waste. The present study investigates the bioactive compounds and antistaphylococcal properties of extracts obtained from raw and fermented Trametes polyzona. T. polyzona was collected from dead woods in farmland around Akungba-Akoko (7 o 27' 32.4''N 5 o 45' 07.8''E) and subjected to submerged and solid-state fermentation. The raw and fermented samples were extracted … Show more

“…It also showed anti-inflammatory activities presumably due to its content in glycopeptides. Furthermore, Oyetayo and Akingbesote (2022) tested the antimicrobial properties of acetone and methanolic extracts from raw and submerged and solid-state fermented Trametes polyzona ( T. polyzona ), collected from dead wood in Nigeria, against S. aureus isolated from blood, soil, water, and urine. The methanolic extract from submerged fermented T. polyzona showed the highest antimicrobial activity against blood isolated S. aureus (DIZ 28 mm), probably due to its ability to dissolve the endogenous compounds of the fungus.…”

“…The use of mushrooms as a healthy food has been enhanced based on their rich proteins and minerals and poor calories and fat 13 . Health-promoting properties such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anticancer, cholesterol-lowering, immunostimulatory and many others had been associated with the consumption of mushroom [14][15][16] .…”

“…Its capacity to break down dead organic matter and utilize a variety of substrates has resulted in a diversity of its biological and metabolic processes [ 40 ]. It is also well-known for its therapeutic benefits, commercial applications (such as in the food sector), and roles in bioremediation and the biodegradation of cellulosic waste [ 41 , 42 ].…”
