Assessment of the Attitudes of Family Caregivers Toward Community Services

Abstract: Previous research has not taken into account the influence of attitudinal variables on the use of community services by dementia caregivers. The Community Service Attitude Inventory (CSAI) was developed to provide a measurement tool to further understanding of community service use by family caregivers. Testing of the CSAI revealed five distinct components of family attitudes toward use of community services.

“…These results suggest that when caregivers receive more family help, they also receive less formal help and get less benefit from it. Previous studies have shown that family caregivers are hesitant to use public care services (LoGiudice et al, 1995;Caserta et al, 1987;Collins et al, 1991;Office of Management and Coordination Agency, 1997;Watts, 1988;). The present study shows, however, that service use can be effective in helping caregivers with the demands placed on them.…”

“…Particularly needed is exploration of the attitudes of those who have not been affected by dementia since, they, not persons with dementia, are likely to initiate and maintain the use of community services (Collins, Stommel, King, & Given, 1991). Their attitudes can influence help-seeking intention and behavior, i.e., whether families will use services, which services they will use, when they will use services, the amount of services they will use once initiated, and whether a service is considered useful (Bass, McCarthy, Eckert, & Bichelr, 1994;Collins et al, 1991;Miller & Mukherjee, 1999;Pedlar & Biegel, 1999). Therefore, investigating the public's attitudes is necessary to understand the future demand for community services and prepare for these demands from potential users.…”

“…Attitudes toward receiving formal services were measured using items adapted from the Community Service Attitude Inventory (Collins, King, & Given, 1991). Participants were asked to rate the degree to which they agreed with a specific statement on a 5-point scale from 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree.…”
