Assessment of the Corrosion Behavior of FeAl Based Intermetallics in NaCl Solution

Abstract

The corrosion assessment of intermetallic based-FeAl alloys with Ag and Li (3 at. %) produced by casting in induction furnace was realized. The corrosion study of intermetallic alloys immersed in a NaCl aqueous dissolution was done by electrochemical characterizations using the cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. According to the results of the microstructural characterization, the base alloy was composed for the Fe3Al minority phase homogeneously distributed in the FeAl matrix phase. Additionally, the addition of Li and Ag promoted the modification of microstructure morphology and the quantity of the observed minority phase. The CV results showed an active oxidation behavior and a partially passive region between the oxidation potential values. The EIS results suggest the presence of an active corrosion behavior associated with a localized corrosion mechanism. The electrochemical results were complemented by microstructural and chemical characterization by the use of scanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersion.
