Assessment of the Fertilization Capacity of the Aquaculture Sediment for Wheat Grass as Sustainable Alternative Use

Abstract: Periodic removal of sediment from aquaculture ponds is practiced to maintain their productivity and animal welfare. The recovery of sediment as a plant fertilizer could alleviate the costs of sediment removal. The objective of this study was to test the effects of a dried sediment, extracted from an aquaculture pond used for common carp cultivation, on the growth and physiology of potted wheat grass and the quality of the juice obtained from wheat grass. The results showed that sediment application did not pro… Show more

“…The growth performance, flesh quality, blood biochemical profile and intestinal microflora data were statistically processed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey Test ( p < 0.05) using the SPSS software version 21 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA) [ 33 ]. The results were reported as means ± standard error of men (S.E.M.).…”

“…Using radio-labeling and aminotriazole inhibition, it was shown that CAT takes care of 50% of the hydrogen peroxide, and glutathione peroxidase/reductases take care of the other half [ 56 ]. Moreover, the literature data indicate increased levels of the enzyme, obtained by overexpression in different organelles, which extended the lifespan of transgenic laboratory mice by 20%, the greatest increase being related to the mitochondria, where the highest levels of reactive oxygen species are generated [ 56 , 57 , 58 , 59 ].…”

“…Although the application of biosolids led to a lower synthesis of bioactive compounds, the positive effects at the morphological and physiological level support its use on soils affected by erosion for the cultivation of basil. The integration of sewage sludge into agricultural practices not only enhances soil fertility and nutrient content but also aligns with sustainable agricultural principles, reducing dependence on conventional chemical fertilizers [ 29 ]. Despite its potential benefits, the utilization of biosolids in agriculture remains relatively low in regions such as Romania.…”
