Assessment of the in vitro dermal irritation potential of cerium, silver, and titanium nanoparticles in a human skin equivalent model

Abstract: Metal nanoparticles can potentially contact human skin during their manufacture and use in commercial products. This study examined the potential of metal nanoparticles to elicit irritant contact dermatitis in a human skin equivalent model (HSEM) derived from keratinocytes. Ag (10-100 nm), TiO (22-214 nm), and CeO (15-40 nm) nanoparticles were studied. The Ag particles were either coated/shelled with silica or capped with citrate or polyvinylpyrrolidone and were in water. The TiO and CeO particles were suspend… Show more

“…This difference in sensitivity between 2D cell culture and 3D RHE model is consistent with the efficient barrier protection of the reconstructed epidermis. In a recent study [ 36 ], silver nanoparticles with different sizes (10–100 nm) and with different coating (citrate, PVP or silica) as well as silver nitrate similarly did not induce skin irritation. In this study, the exposure time was 1 h followed by 42 h recovery and silver concentration was 1 mg/mL.…”

“…After duplicates removal, 31 studies had their titles and abstracts screened, and 24 studies were excluded because they did not meet the eligibility criteria. Then, the full-text screening did not exclude any studies, resulting in 7 included articles (Park et al, 2011;Choi et al, 2014;Kato et al, 2014;Horie et al, 2016;Kim et al, 2016;Miyani and Hughes, 2016;Tang et al, 2018) in this systematic review (Figure 3 Prisma Flow diagram).…”

“…From the seven articles found and analyzed, four studies used EpiDerm TM (MatTek Corporation) (Park et al, 2011;Horie et al, 2016;Kim et al, 2016;Miyani and Hughes, 2016), one used the EpiKutis TM (Biocell Biotechnology, China) (Tang et al, 2018), one used KeraSkin (Modern Cell & Tissue Technology, Seoul, Korea) (Choi et al, 2014) and the last one was developed in their own laboratory (Kato et al, 2014). According to the inclusion criteria, all seven articles used TiO 2 NPs as test substance.…”
