Assessment of the Impact of Climate Change on Drought Characteristics in the Hwanghae Plain, North Korea Using Time Series SPI and SPEI: 1981–2100

Abstract: North Korea is a food-deficit nation in which climate change could have a significant impact on drought. We analyzed drought characteristics in the Hwanghae Plain, North Korea using both the multiple timescales of the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) from 1981 to 2100. The probability of non-exceedance for a one-month SPEI below −1.0 was only 1.1% in the spring season of 1995 but increased to 24.4% in 2085. The SPEI for a ten-year return … Show more

“…A run is defined as a portion of the time series of a drought variable, in which all values are either below or above the selected truncation level; accordingly, it is called either a negative run or a positive run [5]. In runs theory, drought intensity is the average value of a drought parameter below the threshold level, which is measured as the drought severity divided by the duration [36]. In this study, we set SPEI of −1 as the threshold value for identifying drought conditions, with SPEIs below −1 being used to estimate drought intensity.…”

“…It has been frequently used on time series of irregular hydrologic events to identify drought components and investigate their statistical properties [21], [22]. A -run‖ is defined as a portion of time series of the variable that is less than the chosen threshold [23], [24]. Following Nalbantis and Tsakiris [18], the drought event in this study is defined as the period where SDI values are less than the threshold value of zero.…”

“…However, the same authors state that these results are strongly dependent on simulations from only one set of climate change data. There are therefore limitations due to the uncertainty in various climate change scenarios [16]. Zhou et al (2017) studied the future effects of climate change on crop irrigation requirement in the Hetao irrigation district, China.…”

“…Only two studies [9,11] identify, propose, discuss, and develop an adaptation scenario. Five other studies [10,14,[16][17][18] belong more properly to the category "Climate change impact studies". The last three studies [24][25][26] analyze changes that have occurred in the climate and with water resources in the recent past decades, without developing any future scenarios.…”
