As an economic activity, mining can have positive and negative effects for the community. These negative impacts along with some of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of mining actions threaten the achievement of sustainable development (SD) goals. Therefore, an impact evaluation of SD indexes is significant for protecting mining actions in line with the objectives of SD. For that reason, a system classification was proposed with the use of the fuzzy decisionmaking trial and evaluation laboratory (fuzzy DEMATEL) technique to study and analyse eleven impacting factor interrelationships in open pit mines. Since this technique is based upon the opinion of experts, the fuzzy coding technique was used. In this manner, the weight of the impacting factors and their related ratings were chosen to develop a new classification system. Based on the proposed rating system, FDSDI was introduced to describe system-levels qualitatively and quantitatively. The application of FDSDI was investigated in a bauxite mine as a case study. The results show that FDSDI is an easy and effective tool to evaluate sustainability in bauxite mining. Generally, the conducted technique presents a systematic approach for holistic analysis of the impacting factors of SD in open pit mines.

Blasting operations in open-pit mines generally have various management strategies relating to flyrock. There are empirical models for calculating the flyrock distance, but due to the complexity and uncertainty of rock properties and their interactions with blasting properties, there are still no models that can predict the flyrock distance that may be applicable across mining operations in general. In this regard, the Jajarm bauxite mine complex was used as a case study. The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate different methods that can predict flyrock distance. For this purpose, soft computing models were developed using generalized regression neural network (GRNN), gene expression programming (GEP) and genetic-algorithm-based GRNN (GA-GRNN) methods. To obtain statistical models, multivariable regression was applied in the form of linear and nonlinear equations. A flyrock index was introduced using a classification system developed by incorporating fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation methods (fuzzy DEMATEL). In order to achieve this goal, the data of 118 blasts in eight mines of the Jajarm bauxite complex were collected and used. Following this, four performance benchmarks were applied: the coefficient of determination (R2), variance accounted for (VAF), root-mean-square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). The performance of the models was evaluated, and they were compared with each other as well as with the most common previous empirical models. The obtained results indicate that the GA-GRNN model has a higher performance in predicting the flyrock distance in actual cases compared to the other models. At first, data on factors that were the main cause of flyrock (and had a direct impact on it) were collected and classified from different blasts. Then, using the collected data, 19 different combinations were established, which can be used to provide the appropriate predictive equation. The purpose of this work is to more accurately predict flyrock and prevent heavy damage to buildings and mining machines across the mining complex.

In the longwall exploitation system, the main gates are subject of the most intensive movements of the rock mass, where the proximity of the excavation front is a key factor. The paper presents the results of a research on the constants mb and s of Hoek-Brown failure criterion for the rocks surrounding the gallery: shale, sandy shale, coal and medium-grained sandstone, in relation to the distance to longwall face. The research comprised numerical modeling based on convergence monitoring records. The convergence measurements were carried out on three stations in a selected maingate in a coal mine from Upper Silesia Coal Basin near Jastrzębie-Zdrój, concurrently with changing distance to the longwall face. The measured were the width, the height and the heave of the floor of the gate. The measurements showed that the convergence at the longwall-maingate crossing was 1.5-3 times greater than in the locations much further from the longwall face. It was demonstrated that this effect was due to continuously changing properties of the rock-mass surrounding the gallery that can be expressed as decreasing empirical parameters mb i s of Hoek-Brown's criterion. These parameters are decreasing exponentially together with the distance to the longwall face The consistency between the theoretical and factual curve varies between 70% to 98%. The change of each of the parameters can be described by general equation P = a • exp (-b • d ), where a, b are constants, and d is the distance to the excavation face. The authors highlight that during the measurements period the horizontal stress was 1.45 to 1.61 times greater than the concurrent vertical stress. The so high horizontal stress causes heave of unsupported gallery floor which is commonly observed in the mines in Silesia.
