PurposeGlobal construction sector studies have significantly explored the impact of automation techniques, revealing their transformative potential. However, research on their application within specific local contexts, especially in developing countries like Nigeria, is sparse. Nigeria presents a unique context marked by challenges such as skilled labor shortage, safety concerns and cost efficiency. Therefore, investigating the implementation of automation techniques in the Nigerian construction industry is crucial to address these challenges, bring transformative advancements and contribute to a more balanced global discourse on automation adoption. This study aims to fill this significant research gap.Design/methodology/approachA mixed research method was deployed which combined both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. Two focus group discussions conducted with 23 experts from both industry and academic institutions (qualitative) yielded 17 drivers which were used to formulate a well-structured questionnaire (quantitative), which was disseminated to construction professionals. Collected data underwent analysis through various statistical techniques, including percentages, frequencies, mean item scores and exploratory factor analysis.FindingsPrincipal component analysis (PCA) yielded four driver clusters namely: (1) performance-related drivers, (2) visualization and efficiency-related drivers, (3) technological and human-related drivers and (4) economic-related drivers.Practical implicationsThe study provides empirical insights that can aid stakeholders, decision-makers, policymakers and the government in formulating strategies to promote automation techniques in the Nigerian construction industry and beyond.Originality/valueThis study's originality lies in its exploration of the untapped potential of automation techniques in the Nigerian construction industry, offering novel perspectives on how these technologies can address specific challenges such as skilled labor shortage, safety concerns and cost efficiency, thereby paving the way for transformative advancements in the sector.

The uniqueness and inherent complexities of the construction industry require the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to improve its processes and enhance overall competitiveness and performance. This study examined the awareness level and application of AI to provide useful insights into the state of AI applications in the Nigerian construction industry. A quantitative research design with the use of a questionnaire was used to obtain data from 53 construction professionals in the Lagos Island area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The professionals included Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Civil Engineers, Builders, and Estate Surveyors selected based on a purposive sampling technique. Data from the survey were analyzed with frequencies, mean, and ANOVA. The study found that most of the respondents were aware of the application of AI in construction, and there was no difference in the awareness level of the participants irrespective of their professional affiliations, organizational type, and organizational size. Generally, the most common application of AI among the participants surveyed were generative designs in BIM, measurement and estimating software, and the use of sensors in intelligent buildings. Moreover, design and project planning was found to be the most critical areas of need for AI in the study area. The study underscores the need for investments in other AI applications other than BIM and estimating software to improve productivity, performance, and enhance client satisfaction.

The world is a global village today undoubtedly due to advances in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and their education. The knowledge from these disciplines influences various aspects of human daily affairs, career choices and the type of education acquired by citizens. STEM literature across the world has put Africa at the tail end of development. Africa’s underdevelopment may not be argued owing to empirical literature in the direction of poor development. However, the global demand for competence in STEM disciplines continues to rise at a rate developed countries find difficult to keep up due to shortage of man power as against demands. This surge in demand creates a gap that must be filled in pursuit of sustainable growth. Science, technology, robotics, engineering, the arts and mathematics (STREAM) education remains obscure among countries in Africa, with the paradigm shift to aesthetics with arts and automation in robotics globally calling for redirection in developing regions. South African and Nigerian curricula have been moderated to accommodate coding and robotics as well as physics in technology, with green energy and elementary automation, respectively. This manuscript explores education as the panacea for poverty alleviation, sustainable growth and equality among citizens. The current state of affairs of STREAM education in Africa and its potential for a youthful and useful population are also explored.
