XJ-25, a strain with strong antioxidant activity was isolated from sand biological soil crusts in Gurban Tonggut Desert, Xinjiang, China. Strain XJ-25 is closely related to Bacillus simplex through the 16s rDNA sequencing combined with morphological, physiological and biochemical analysis. The medium for optimal antioxidant activity was NB with 1.5 g/L glucose. Based on kinetic assay, antioxidant activity began at early exponential growth phases; maximum activity was reached at the stationary phase. Scavenging effects on DPPH, the hydroxyl and superoxide radicals, Total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and protection against lipid damage were evaluated. The main antioxidant compounds were in the extracellular secreted supernatant of XJ-25. The active compounds were very stable at the pH range of 2 to 12, temperature from 40°C to 121°C, as well as in some organic solvents. Thin layer chromatography assay by DPPH scavenging assay show two active spots with Rf values of 0.35 and 0.47 and both of them were ninhydrin positive.

In our continuing search for biologically active natural product(s) of plant origin, Buddleja saligna, a South African medicinal plant, was screened in line with its traditional use for antidiabetic (yeast alpha glucosidase inhibitory) and antiplasmodial (against a chloroquine sensitive strain of Plasmodium falciparum (NF54)) activities. The hexane fraction showed the most promising activity with regards to its antidiabetic (IC 50 ¼ 260 ± 0.112 mg/ml) and antiplasmodial (IC 50 ¼ 8.5 ± 1.6 mg/ml) activities. Using activity guided fractionation three known terpenoids (betulonic acid, betulone and spinasterol) were isolated from this species for the first time. The compounds displayed varying levels of biological activities (antidiabetic: 27.31 mg/ml ! IC 50 ! 5.6 mg/ml; antiplasmodial: 14 mg/ml ! IC 50 ! 2 mg/ml) with very minimal toxicity.

In this study, 50% ethanol extract prepared from dry leaves of eight plants grown wildly in Mongolia were characterized for DPPH radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical cation scavenging activity, superoxide anion scavenging activity, ferric reducing power, iron chelating ability, and content of total phenol, flavonoid, and flavanol in order to find good sources of natural antioxidant from plant kingdom. Correlation coefficients between antioxidant parameters and contents of polyphenolic compounds were also calculated. Among them, leaves of superoxide anion, and nitric oxide scavenging activity, reducing power, total phenolics, total flavonoids and condensed tannin content.
