Assessment of the medicinal potentials of the methanol extracts of the leaves and stems of Buddleja saligna

Abstract: Background: Buddleja saligna Willd (Loganiaceae) is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree; trunk short, often gnarled and crooked; crown dense, rounded or domed-shaped; foliage greyish green. The wild olives are traditionally used to lower blood pressures in many parts of the world. In southern Africa, bark and leaf decoctions are used to treat colic, coughs, colds, sore eyes, urinary problems and as purgatives.

“…Antioxidant activity is often associated with the phenolic compounds present in the plant extract (Qingming et al 2010). Polyphenols are mainly the methanol extracts in many leaves and stems of plants with antioxidant activity (Adedapo et al 2009), which can absorb and neutralise free radicals, quench singlet and triplet oxygen, or decompose peroxides.…”

“…It is used as a purgative; to treat coughs, colds, diabetes, tuberculosis, thrush and sores, anasarca and chest pains 3,4 . The biological activities reported for B. saligna include antiplasmodial, acetylcholinesterase and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory 2 , anti-mycobacterial 5 , antibacterial and antioxidant 6 , antimutagenic 7 activities. In our previous studies, we reported the interesting antiplasmodial and alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activities exhibited by the hexane fraction of B. saligna 2 .…”

“…Determination of total flavonoids Total flavonoid content was measured by AlCl 3 assay (Adedapo et al, 2009). Equal volume of sample solution and 2% AlCl 3 in ethanol were mixed well and after 1 h at room temperature absorbance was measured at 420 nm.…”
