“…64 The present investigation induced astrocytic activation, as evidenced by the upregulation (overexpression) of GFAP in various brain regions, including the cerebral cortex, cerebellar cortex, and hippocampus of rats assigned to group II, as depicted in Figure 6B,F,J, in comparison to the control rats assigned to group I which revealed mild immunoreactivity to GFAP, as depicted in Figure 6A,E,I. These results come in agreement with the findings obtained by Shalaby et al 65 in brains of 40 adult female albino rats exposed to silver NPs at a dose of 100 mg/ kg for 2 months. Astrocytes play a critical role in maintaining neuronal viability, preserving the integrity of the BBB, regulating vascular reactivity, facilitating energy metabolism, controlling extracellular glutamate levels, and safeguarding against ROS.…”

“…In the present study, AgNPs treated group showed significant increase in the lipid peroxidation marker (MDA) level, while the cellular antioxidant enzyme system (SOD, CAT and GSH) levels were significantly decreased. Previous studies reported the same findings [31,32,33], indicating that one of the main mechanisms associated with AgNPs toxicity is ROS generation that leads to oxidative damage of the cell. According to Nie et al [34], silver ions (Ag+) are responsible for AgNPs toxicity, which are released from the nanoparticles upon cell entry, inducing ROS production.…”

“…These findings were in agreement with a previous study (He et al 2014) who demonstrated the toxic effects of SeNPs at doses higher than 4mg/kg on the reproductive organs of rats. On the other hand, administration of low doses of SeNPs ranging from 0.4 to 2mg/kg has a reported beneficial activity on different organs, including brain (Bashir et al 2021;Shalaby et al 2023) and reproductive organs (Hozyen et al 2020).…”
