Assessment of the Nutritional Status of the Hemodialysis Patients by Anthropometric Measurements

Abstract: This study assessed the nutritional status of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) by utilizing bedside anthropometric measurements. MethodsThis prospective cross-sectional study was done from November 2020 till April 2021 on ESRD patients three times a week MHD at our centre. Anthropometric measurements including body mass index (BMI), triceps skinfold thickness (TSFT), mid-arm circumference (MAC), calf circumference (CC) and handgrip strength (HGS) were measured mid-arm m… Show more

“…Similar to BMI, anthropometric measurements showed a strong association with MNA (MAC, p=0.036; CC, p<0.001; MAMC, p=0.016). As compared to our previous study [13], MNA showed comparative effectiveness to anthropometric measurements alone in this study. Occupation, socioeconomic status and presence of diabetes mellitus did not show any association with MNA in our study.…”

“…Most of these tools are less reliable for comparing nutritional status and mortality in MHD patients and some like BMI shows reverse epidemiological correlation as compared to the general population [16]. Previously we did a study of nutritional assessment in which we did bedside anthropometric measurements only [13]. In this study, we evaluated nutritional status of MHD patients using MNA and compared it with anthropometric measurements.…”

“…For each patient, MUAC, MAMC, and TSF were compared with reference values of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), through the comparison with the Frisancho reference tables [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ].…”

“…Although nutritional evaluation could benefit from sophisticated devices for measuring body composition, such as bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) or CT Scan analysis, those devices were unavailable in all the centers included in this multicentric study. Although less precise, BMI and anthropometry are inexpensive and very widespread nutritional evaluation tools, classically used as an approach to the evaluation of fat/lean mass [22] and available everywhere, even in institutions with scarce resources.…”
