Assessment of the Present Status of the Red Sea Coastal Zone Between Haql and Yanbu, Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The aim of this study is to assess the concentration level of some heavy metals (Zn, Cu and Fe) in the surface sediments of the coastal area from Haql to Yanbu along the Saudi Arabian Red Sea during 2009. The concentration (µg/g) levels range from 4.38 to 73.25 for Zn; 0.0 to 41.25 for Cu; 1263 to 33763 for Fe in lower intertidal sediments. They range in upper intertidal sediments from 5.13 to 63.0 for Zn; 0.0 to 53.75 for Cu, and 2350 to 89350 for Fe. The present environmental status was assessed using, enric… Show more

“…Several study sites having low hard coral cover, human impacts are evident from habitation, tourism and fishing activity and have been identified as local threats. Several anthropogenic factor cause damage to corals (Dinsdale and Harriot, 2004) such as destructive fishing (Fenner, 2012) and coral mining (Hariri, 2012). Local fishermen around Pramuka Island are still using muroami to collect fish and Iskandar (2011) has reported several fishermen in Seribu islands are still using muroami.…”

“…There are several causes of coral mortality such as the changes of environmental, human (Riegl et al, 2012), competition with algae (Subhan et al, 2014) and disease (Baird et al, 2012;Subhan et al, 2011). Overfishing and destructive fishing, ship anchor, coral mining are the examples of the human factor on coral mortality (Hariri, 2012). The risk of coral mortality are the increasing of wave energy reaching the island shores (Sheppard et al, 2005).…”

“…Benthic surveys at Yanbu in 2008 reported live coral cover of only ~ 20%, with Pocillopora, Porites, and Acropora, the most abundant genera (Riegl et al 2012;Bruckner and Dempsey 2015). Subsequent assessments reported generally increasing coral cover of between 16 and 53% in 2012 (Hariri 2012), 25% in 2014 and 45% from 2017 to 2019 (Anton et al 2020). The significant increase in coral cover from 2014 to 2019 (Anton et al 2020) suggests that among the four regions we sampled, Yanbu was the least impacted by recent bleaching events, and that subsequent recovery occurs generally within a decade (Anton et al 2020).…”
