Assessment of the Socio-Economic Impacts of Extreme Weather Events on the Coast of Southwest Europe during the Period 2009–2020

Abstract: Coastal regions in Southwest Europe have experienced major interventions and transformations of the territory with unprecedented urban development, primarily related to growing tourism activity. The coast is the place where marine and terrestrial processes converge, making it highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change. However, the lack of information on the frequency of these extreme weather events and their impacts on the coast hampers an accurate analysis of the consequences of global change. This p… Show more

“…In the case of landslides, few regions include special plans for this type of risk. In the case of the Balearic Islands, after the terrible flash flood of Sant Llorenç des Cardassar in Mallorca in October 2018, which caused 13 fatalities [24]; a new special plan for flooding was adopted in 2022 (INUNBAL) which includes landslide and rockfall risk related to extreme meteorological events.…”

“…The period also coincides with one of the worst pandemics ever to affect the world in recent memory, the COVID-19 pandemic [15]. Given the increase in the intensity of extreme weather events [16,17], the cost of climate change and the occurrence of COVID-19 remains a matter of international interest. The advent of COVID-19 has seen a reinvigoration of greater demand for environmental protection and sustainability [18] within the tourism sector [19][20][21].…”
