Assessment of the Tear Evaporation Rate in Chronic Smokers Using Delfin VapoMeter

Abstract: Background: Smoking cigarettes is associated with many chronic illnesses such as cancer, heart diseases, and cataract. In addition, smokers are more likely to develop dry eye symptoms compared with nonsmokers. Purpose: To assess the tear evaporation rate in chronic smokers using a VapoMeter. Materials and Method: This observational, case-control and nonrandomized study included one hundred and twenty male smokers that ranged in age from 18 to 43 years (mean ± SD = 25.4±5.8 years). An age (18-43 years) matching… Show more

“…No significant differences were found in the OSDI and TER scores between myopic and hyperopic subjects. Recently, a Delfin VapoMeter was used to assess the TER of chronic smokers and of subjects with thyroid gland disorder [ 22 , 23 ]. In smokers ( N = 120; 25.4 ± 5.8 years), the median TER score was significantly ( p < 0.05) higher (37.7 (59.3) g/m 2 h) compared with the control group (15.4 (13.1) g/m 2 h) [ 23 ].…”

“…The tear evaporation rate (TER) has been measured efficiently using a portable evaporimeter [ 22 , 23 ]. The use of a portable evaporimeter for measuring TER is quick, convenient, repeatable, and noninvasive as compared with other techniques [ 24 ].…”

“…16,19,39 There are several pharmacologic methods, which include tear supplementation, tear retention, tear stimulation and anti-inflammatory agents. 40 On the other hand, there are many possible non-pharmacologic approaches regarding the management of DE pathology. These include avoidance of exacerbating factors and eyelid hygiene.…”

“…Common tools used to diagnose the dry eye include the Schirmer test (20), phenol red thread (20), tear break-up time (21), osmolarity (22), tear evaporation rate (23), and tear ferning (TF) (24) tests. Alongside other in vivo dry eye tests, the TF test has been proven to be simple, repeatable, and useful for assessing the quality of tears (25).…”
