Assessment of the yield loss imparted by Orobanche aegyptiaca in tomato in Pakistan

Abstract: Broomrapes (Orobanche sp.) are root holoparasitic plants causing severe damage to various families of horticultural crops. A Preliminary survey was carried in tomato fields infested with orobanche in Potohar plateau of Pakistan. Results indicated that each planting bed comprising10-12 tomato plants contained 7-8 parasitic weeds. Overall survey indicated the 65-70% plants suffered partial or complete yield loss. Further, it was estimated that the number of weeds inhabiting plant-1 was ranged from 2-4. Yield los… Show more

“…Other changes in the spectral profile of mono‐ and poly/saccharides can be followed by IR bands at 1031/1153 cm −1 and 1012/1054 cm −1 that are assigned to the deformations of the COH groups and stretches of the COC groups (Table ) . We summed up intensities of the 1031 and 1153 cm −1 bands and the 1012 and 1054 cm −1 bands, because their individual trends in the cancer progression were similar (data not shown while this trend can also be observed in the second derivative IR spectra in Figure C), and we assumed that they represent the same groups of biomolecules.…”

“…Broomrapes include over 100 species and represent some of the most devastating parasitic plants, posing a significant challenge to agricultural production (Bari et al, 2019 ; Das et al, 2020 ; Wu & Qiang, 2006 ). In 2018, it was estimated that global annual losses owing to broomrapes damage were $1.3–2.6 billion (¥ 8.2–16.5 bn) (Ahmad et al, 2018 ). Orobanche cumana and Phelipanche aegyptiaca are widely distributed in northern China and cause catastrophic damage to tomatoes, sunflower, tobacco, legumes, carrot, and other crops (Wickett et al, 2011 ).…”

“…It is estimated that 16 million ha in the Mediterranean region and Western Asia are affected by broomrapes with worldwide annual crop losses as a result of broomrapes infestation about 1. 17-2.33 billion € [6,7]. On average, sunflower seed losses caused by broomrape infestation can exceed 50% when susceptible hybrids are grown, frequently reaching 100% in heavily infested fields [8][9][10].…”
