Assessment of Total Suspended Sediment and Bed Sediment Grains in Upstream Areas of Lata Berangin, Terengganu

Abstract: The amount of suspended sediment yield and the size of sediment grains an indicator of hydrological cycle, especially in the river. The sediment transportation process is one of the measurements of water resources management. Equilibrium of the river depends on the flow rate of water and by several factors such as frequency of rainfall, climate changes and land use activities that changes then effected to the river flow. Sedimentation problems occur in reservoirs, rivers, lakes, flood plains and offshore. This… Show more

“…The rivers are very important source to humans and other organisms as they are essential resources for living organisms. Any anthropogenic, hydrological, geomorphological factors and climate changes around the catchment can have detrimental effects on both sediment quantity and quality [7][8][9][10][11].…”

“…The intensity and quantity of rainfall in Terengganu River Basin are prejudiced by the water level flow and the rates of erosion processes. However, relationship between the rate of side and riverbank erosion is projected to increase in sediment production [19]. The intensity and value of rainfall play a great role in river plan change.…”

“…Despite this trend, based on scientific knowledge of river plan change, studies have not been conducted on Terengganu River. In addition, this study will not be restricted to river plan change but will also diagnose the effect on water quality which is an aspect that researchers neglect when assessing river plan change despite the fact that they are strongly interrelated [19].…”

“…The impact of this lack of control will bring changes to the rate of sedimentation in the river and will cause changes in the climate [22]. Uncontrolled development in areas that are prone to flood and uncontrolled deforestation will trigger the increase of flood frequency as well as its magnitude [1].…”
