“…However, the exact mode of action of EOs against this target species has not been clarified yet, although previous studies demonstrated that monoterpenes could interfere with the octopaminergic system of the pests, resulting in damages to the nervous system [15,58]. To the best of our knowledge, the mode of action of EO in T. confusum has just been investigated by Petrović et al [59]; this study demonstrated that Carum carvi L. EO can alter the antioxidative defense system (i.e., catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione-S-transferase), as well as the detoxification system (i.e., lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione) [59].…”

“…Numerous studies confirmed that EOs and their components exert significant influence on insect metabolic pathways, elevate ROS production as a consequence of impairment of mitochondrial function, provoke damage to lipids, proteins and DNA, lead to cell membrane disruption, deplete reduced thiols, and induce activities of antioxidative enzymes and synthesis of Hsp [ 96 , 97 , 99 , 100 , 101 , 102 ]. Our results on the gradual elevation of oxidatively damaged proteins and lipids, and reduced level of thiols from sublethal (1/5 LC 50 , 1/2 LC 50 ) to lethal EO concentrations (LC 50 ) after 24 h of exposure showed that oxidative stress play an important role in thyme EO toxicity against A. obtectus .…”

“…Managing insect pests and vectors through environmentally sustainable approaches represent a major and timely challenge (Benelli and Beier 2017;Stevenson et al 2017;Chaieb et al 2018;Isman 2018Isman , 2020Benelli et al 2019a;Pavela et al 2019a;Petrović et al 2019), to relevant non-target effects of synthetic pesticides on human health and environment (Desneux et al 2007;Ullah et al 2019a, b;Varikou et al 2019), and their efficacy threatened by rapid resistance development in target species (Naqqash et al 2016;Yavaşoglu et al 2019;Guz et al 2020). In this framework, the present research was aimed to investigate the insecticidal activity of A. campestris, P. arabica, and S. satureioides essential oils extracted from plants collected in Algeria.…”
