Assessment of unilateral spatial neglect in children using the Teddy Bear Cancellation Test

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to provide normative data for the Teddy Bear Cancellation Test (TBCT) and to evaluate prospectively the frequency of unilateral spatial neglect (USN) in children with acquired brain injury (ABI). In the control group (n=419; 218 males, 201 females; mean age 5y 1mo [SD 1y 4mo]; range 3 to 8y) omissions were rare and decreased with age. A left displacement of the first three teddy bears cancelled was observed with increasing age. This preferential left-to-right cancelling strategy w… Show more

“…Teddy bears cancellation test (Laurent-Vannier et al, 2006): the child aged more than 3 years is asked to cross out or to point to all the teddy bears (n = 15) distributed on the page (21 cm × 29.7 cm, landscape orientation) among 60 distractors (simple drawings such as a shoe). The number of correctly cancelled targets constitutes the score.…”

“…Cancellation tests are widely used to measure visuospatial neglect following brain injury (Ferber & Karnath, 2001;Laurent-Vannier et al, 2006;Linden et al, 2005). The test typically presents a minimally arranged array of targets and distractors on a conventionally sized sheet of paper.…”
