Assessment of Vision-Related Quality of Life in an Older Population Subsample: The Blue Mountains Eye Study

Abstract: The findings from this community-dwelling older population show that the NEI-VFQ-25 differentiates well between various levels of visual impairment with regard to the magnitude of their impact on vision-specific quality of life. Greater impacts were noted among persons with bilateral compared to unilateral impairment, with increasing impacts at greater severities of visual impairment. Visual impairment from refractive errors is more frequent than from underlying pathologic disorders, but the impact of correcta… Show more

“…The Danish adapted version was tested and validated in 1998 (Bjorner et al 1998a,b,c). The self-administrated SF-36 has been used in various ophthalmological studies (Cruickshanks et al 1999;Chia et al 2003Chia et al , 2004Chia et al , 2006bVarma et al 2006;Elliott et al 2009;Gall et al 2009) and has been found useful for collecting data from older patients as well as visually impaired patients (Chia et al 2006a).…”

“…Although the impact of visual impairment on visual functioning, health, and well-being has been the subject of several studies, none has analyzed the impact of low vision on employment factors, even though previous studies have clearly shown that visual impairment negatively affects visual functioning and health-related quality of life (QOL) [1,2,3,4]. Most particularly, poorer self- reported visual functioning results in difficulties with driving, executing both distant and near tasks, and managing money [3,5,6,7].…”

“…The NEI-VFQ 25 has been used in patients with a variety of eye diseases including diabetic retinopathy, cataract, macular degeneration, glaucoma, and low vision. The instrument provides reproducible and valid data when used across multiple conditions of varying severity [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. While it provides a summary score, it does not yield preferencebased health utility scores.…”
