Assessment of water quality in urban streams based on larvae of Hydropsyche angustipennis (Insecta, Trichoptera)

Abstract: Hydropsyche angustipennis (Insecta, Trichoptera) larvae were used as indicators of stream contamination in the city of Łódź, Poland. The larvae of H. angustipennis were present at 9 sampling sites established for this study. Significant differences between the sampling sites were noted for environmental parameters as well as concentration of chemicals in water and biodiversity of aquatic invertebrates. Statistical analyses showed significant correlations between quantity and quality of water pollutants and den… Show more

“…We sequenced the mitogenome of Hydropsyche pellucidula BMNH-1425186 (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae). The high bioindicator value of the genus Hydropsyche (Tszydel et al 2015), makes this mitogenome a useful tool for biomonitoring approaches.…”

“…The results of fauna studies also testify to the very low quality of these habitats. In the lower Jasie n and Ł odka, the numbers of benthic macroinvertebrates and fish were found to be decimated; as few as two to five invertebrate taxa and only one or two fish taxa were identified , with heavy metal accumulation also being noted in their tissues, as well as serious morphological anomalies (Tszydel et al 2015(Tszydel et al , 2016.…”

“…They are holometabolous insects with aquatic larvae and pupae with terrestrial adults [17]. Most species of caddisfly in the Hydropsychidae family spend their larval lives in running water and have been reported to be excellent bioindicators of trace element pollution in aquatic ecosystems [18]. They take up trace elements directly from water, sediments, and diet, and serve as a trophic link to higher food chain organisms such as fish and aquatic birds [19].…”
