We describe the mitochondrial genome of Hydropsyche pellucidula Curtis 1834, which is first described for the suborder Annulipalpia and the first in the order Trichoptera to show a non-canonical gene order. The mitogenome was obtained by de novo assembly of shotgun sequenced total genomic DNA using Illumina Miseq technology, which produced an average coverage of 115× and a minimum coverage of 48×. The mitochondrial genome includes 13 protein-coding genes, 2 rRNAs and 22 tRNAs. The genome is characterized by a rearrangement in the relative position of protein-coding and ribosomal genes. This mitogenome sequence will be useful for studying the family Hydropsychidae, which is commonly used for freshwater pollution biomonitoring.

Deceptive ecological status of urban streams and rivers—evidence from diatom indices

Urbanization directly affects the ecological status of streams and rivers: Their beds and drainage basins are often heavily transformed and their habitat conditions disturbed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the extent of human impact in streams in the city of Łódź, Central Poland (~700,000 inhabitants), by pattern recognition analysis of benthic diatom assemblage samples using a Kohonen artificial neural network, principal component analysis, and indicator species analysis. The study also determined the ecological status of the streams using five diatom indices: Multimetric Diatom Index, Specific Pollution Sensitivity Index, Generic Diatom Index, Biological Diatom Index, and Trophic Diatom Index. The samples demonstrated considerable variation in ecological status. Examples of poor and bad ecological status were observed, clearly resulting from strong human pressure; however, good status and moderate status were also recorded, both at natural sites and, unexpectedly, those which were severely transformed, whose beds were covered with concrete and which were located downstream from combined sewer overflows. Such sites demonstrated high water conductivity of up to 1440 μS/cm, but this was accompanied by other more favorable conditions: The water flowed from upstream stretches enclosed in downtown underground canals with a fast current, low water temperature, and high average concentration of dissolved oxygen (approximately 10 mg/dm3). These conditions had a mitigating effect, shaping the diatom assemblages to a specific form with the highest species richness and the highest number of indicator taxa observed in the study. In summary, the hydromorphological transformation of streambeds may result in seemingly good ecological status at heavily degraded sites. Therefore, conclusions based on diatom‐based biomonitoring of urban streams and rivers should be drawn with caution.

Aquatic insects can accumulate pollutants such as cadmium from stream sediments. This research aimed to monitor cadmium concentrations in both larvae and adult Hydropsychidae (Trichoptera, Insecta) in Mae Tao (MT1 to MT5) and Mae Ku (MK2 and MK8) watersheds in northern Thailand. Samples were collected twice a month from July 2011 to May 2012 at seven sampling sites. The cadmium concentrations in the stream sediments ranged from 0.12 to 21.5 mg kg-1 wet weight. The highest concentration was recorded from the MT3 sampling site (21.5 mg kg-1), which is also closest to a mining area. The lowest concentration was recorded from the MK2 sampling site (0.12 mg kg-1). Cadmium concentrations in both larvae and adult Hydropsychidae were not significantly different at all sampling sites. However, the cadmium concentrations in Hydropsychidae larvae that ranged from 0.07-1.70 mg kg-1 were higher than the detected cadmium in adult samples (average 0.020 mg kg-1). There was no significant correlation between cadmium concentrations in sediments, and in both larvae and adult Hydropsychidae. Concentrations of cadmium in adult Hydropsychidae in this study were low. Even though the contamination of heavy metals was low in adult Hydropsychidae, long-term exposure to heavy metals could seriously impact terrestrial animals such as birds and bats that consume these insects.
