Assessment of woody species diversity and composition along a disturbance gradient in Behali Reserve Forest of Biswanath district, Assam, India

Abstract: The present study was carried out in Behali Reserve Forest, a semi-evergreen forest of Assam, India to record and analyze the woody species diversity and community characteristics using random sampling. Altogether, 35 quadrats (20 m × 20 m) were randomly established and studied from August 2018 to April 2019 spreading across nine study sites. A total of 128 (118 identified and 10 unidentified) woody species from 83 genera and 43 families were found in the sampled area of 1.4 ha. Lauraceae with 19 species was t… Show more

“…Children in modern society lose touch with nature and green plants [40][41][42], which, in particular, playgrounds are designed to prevent. Researchers suggest that trees are important elements of healthy child communities [43] that should be integrated at various scales, from landscaping around homes, schools, and kindergartens to connected systems of urban paths, parks, and public gardens.…”

“…The reserve forest is an important area for mammals like Indian Elephant (Elephas maximus L.), Slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang Boddaert), Capped Langur (Trachypithecus pileatus Blyth), Malayan Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor Sparrman), etc. (Islam, Rahmani, 2004;Borah et al, 2021a). This area is also recognised as an Important Bird Area in 1994 and a Key Biodiversity Area in 2004.…”

“…Though the area is dominated by plains, however, some hills lie in the extreme north of the forest. The flora of the forest has been partially worked out (Borah et al, 2020a), as well as the plant community structure as elucidated by Borah et al (2021a), shows the presence of various fig (Ficus sp.) species, as well as other fruit trees forming a suitable refuge for many residential and migratory birds.…”

“…Loss of biodiversity is a current issue in the field of ecology and it is the subject for many researchers. A large number of parameters have been promoted by researchers to measure for the indication of the status of biodiversity in ecologi-cal systems, for conservation, planning, management, environmental monitoring and decision making (Borah et al, 2021). The risk of extinction of a species is provided by representing the list of the threatened species which is based on the most recently available ecological data for that species (Jeph and Khan, 2019;Lasushe et al, 2022).…”
