Assessments of tumor metabolism with CEST MRI

Abstract: Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) is a relatively new contrast mechanism for MRI. CEST MRI exploits a specific MR frequency (chemical shift) of a molecule while generating an image with good spatial resolution using standard MRI techniques, combining the specificity of MRS with the spatial resolution of MRI. Many CEST MRI acquisition methods have been developed to improve analyses of tumor metabolism. GluCEST, CrCEST, and LATEST can map glutamate, creatine, and lactate, which are important metabolit… Show more

“…Tumors typically display upregulated glucose uptake and glycolytic metabolism (55). In the clinical setting, PET imaging with the glucose analog FDG is considered the gold standard technique for non-invasively mapping glucose uptake and for assessing tumor response to conventional therapy (56).…”

“…Its decrease over time reflects the ongoing production of cadaverine and yields a specific activity for LDC that agrees well with fluorescence measurements that also rely on displacement assays with CBs [ 468 ]. Other types of catalytic conversion have also been studied with 1 H NMR using the so-called catalyCEST approach [ 469 ]. The advantage of qHyperCEST is its very high sensitivity that enables following the process just at the very beginning when the conversion rate is still constant.…”

“…Amide proton transfer (APT) imaging is the most widely used CEST technique. APT imaging for cancer assessment has been mainly focused on the brain, but higher APT values have been found in malignant tumors compared with those in normal tissues and benign lesions in brain, breast, prostate, chest, and H&N. APT values also varied between malignant groups and tumor grades [67,68].…”
