Assistive and Therapeutic Effects of Amplification for Auditory Processing Disorder

Abstract: Studies of the effects of amplification with remote microphone hearing aids for children with auditory processing disorder or dyslexia consistently show therapeutic as well as assistive benefits from the amplification. The immediate assistive benefits include improved attention, learning, behavior and participation in class, and improved self-esteem and psychosocial development. The long-term therapeutic benefits include improvements in cortical auditory evoked potential amplitudes to tone stimuli, auditory br… Show more

“…Fortunately, an alternative to HAT, the SFA system, would solve such concerns. It includes a microphone and transmitter worn by the speaker (as per the HAT) and self-adaptive control loudspeakers that will change the output volume in keeping with the background noise to maintain a fixed ideal SNR of the signal (American Academy of Audiology, 2011; Davis, 1991;Keith & Purdy, 2014). Loudspeakers can be placed in the classroom to enhance listening conditions.…”

“…Since then, a new technique, known as “conformal radiation therapy”, in which a target is irradiated by conformal beams from several fixed directions, has emerged and is widely used. At the turn of the new millennium, a more sophisticated treatment technique, known as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), has been introduced in this field 6 , 7) , with developments in this technology advancing virtually every year. It can be used to treat patients using an acceptable dose distribution ( Figure 3 ).…”

“…One of the management strategies recommended to children with APD is the use of Remote Microphone Hearing Aids (RMHAs) in the classroom. The use of this system helps improve the signal-to-noise ratio for children and bypasses the negative effects of background noise and reverberation in the classroom (Johnston et al, 2009; British Society of Audiology, 2011 3 ; Keith and Purdy, 2014). However, only a handful of studies examined the effects of sustained RMHA use on children with APD on specific measures (when not using the devices), such as listening in noise, language and communication, and some attention and memory skills (Johnston et al, 2009;Umat et al, 2011;Smart et al, 2018), with just one using a randomised controlled design (Sharma et al, 2012).…”
