“…The presence of a fluoridated water supply was expected to be associated with dental pain since its preventive role on dental caries and its consequences is widely acknowledged (Bastos et al, ). These results conflict with a previous study carried out in Colombia (Ardila & Agudelo‐Suárez, ), which also included data of the capital cities from a national survey and showed an association between dental pain, gross domestic product and HDI. Different results would be expected with the inclusion of inner cities, as revealed in a previous study on dental pain among preschool children from a national oral health survey in Brazil (Ferreira‐Júnior et al, ).…”

“…The role of oral health behaviours has been shown in previous studies. These results are plausible, since they are risk factors for caries, which in turn is the main cause of dental pain among children, adolescents (Boeira et al, ; Peres et al, ) and other populations groups (Ardila & Agudelo‐Suárez, ; Ferreira‐Júnior et al, ; Santiago et al, ). Furthermore, we have included data on the cities’ caries prevalence at age 12 in 2010, which remained associated with dental pain in the final multilevel model and may be an indicator of past caries experience.…”

“…A MEDLINE search for “toothache” OR “dental pain” AND “prevalence” AND “adults” revealed few population‐based studies of dental pain among adults; with prevalence ranging between 10% in Colombia and 78.9% in South Africa . In addition to the effect of dental pain at an individual level, its impact on overall society is not negligible.…”
