Association between knowledge and risk for cardiovascular disease among older adults: A cross-sectional study in China

Abstract: Objectives This study aimed to describe cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular disease (CVD) knowledge among older adults, and further explore the association between knowledge and risk. Methods In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 1120 older adults who received physical examination in health centers. The participants were interviewed to obtain their behavioral risk factors related to CVD and clinical characteristics. A risk prediction chart was used to predict pa… Show more

“…To measure levels of knowledge, appropriate instruments are required, such as reliable, validated questionnaires [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]. However, there is no gold standard for measuring the level of knowledge of CVRFs, resulting in many of the studies performed over the years having created questionnaires to this end [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Most of these were designed to assess knowledge of CHD itself and awareness of the risk of suffering from CVD but did not specifically focus on the role that CVRFs play in the development of CHD.…”

“…Studies showed that knowledge of behavioral risks is the central element of lifestyle change and individuals who perceive themselves at higher risk of CVDs are more likely to adopt a healthy lifestyle [ 17 21 ]. Therefore, measuring knowledge, risk perception and intention towards a healthy lifestyle is essential to develop and implement targeted public health interventions [ 21 23 ]. Evidence is limited on differences in knowledge and risk perception and their role in variation of CVD burden in vulnerable communities.…”

“…Moreover, knowledge of the risk factors in comparison with one’s own lifestyle may form the risk perception 13 , which is a central psychological construct that could affect adoption of healthy lifestyle and maintenance 14 , 15 . As a result, improving knowledge and risk perception is an integral part of behavioral interventions aimed at reducing incidence of CVD 15 17 .…”
