Association between lactic acid sting test scores, self‐assessed sensitive skin scores and biophysical properties in Chinese females

Abstract: BackgroundLactic acid sting test (LAST) is a classical method to identify sensitive skin. However, some subjects with self‐perceived sensitive skin are negative for LAST.ObjectiveTo determine whether LAST scores are associated with specific phenotype of sensitive skin.MethodsA total of 292 subjects with self‐perceived sensitive skin were enrolled in this study. The Sensitive Scale was used to evaluate the severity of burning, stinging, itching, tautness, erythema and scaling based on 0–10 scale scores. In addi… Show more

“… 45 The positive correlation between LAST stinging scores and TEWL was also observed in the previous studies of healthy Asian females 27 , 45 and Chinese women with sensitive skin. 14 Lactic acid is a small molecule chemical irritant that triggers neurosensory perceptions of stinging, burning, itching, or even pain when contact is made with the skin. The increased penetration of lactic acid caused a higher LAST score to predict sensitive skin.…”

“… 13 In addition, some researchers investigated the correlation of skin parameters and LAST only in sensitive population. 14 , 15 Thus, we aimed to elucidate the different biophysical properties of questionnaire- and LAST-assessed sensitive skin by noninvasive instruments, and the relationship between questionnaire and LAST scores with the biophysical parameters on both the healthy and sensitive populations.…”

“…Calming efficacy was evaluated in 30 volunteers aged 21 to 67 years with dry and reactive skin and known positivity to the lactic acid stinging test [12]. Stinging was induced on D0, D7 and D28 by rubbing a cotton pad impregnated with 10% lactic acid onto one half of the nasolabial fold (randomized for each subject).…”
